9th-Grade Exploratory Program
-
Starting high school is exciting—and choosing a career pathway is a big decision. At Davies, we believe students should experience every opportunity before selecting the program that's right for them.
That's why every 9th-Grader participates in our 9th-Grade Exploratory Program during the first semester. Exploratory gives students the chance to learn about each of Davies' Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, as well as explore the Library program, through engaging, hands-on activities led by our experienced CTE educators.
Rather than choosing a career pathway before ever stepping into high school, students will explore, ask questions, try new skills, and discover interests they may not have known they had.
-
Throughout the first semester, 9th-Graders rotate through all 10 Davies CTE programs over the course of 12 rotations (Automotive Careers is divided into Automotive Technology and Automotive Collision Repair for exploratory purposes). Each rotation lasts approximately five school days, giving students meaningful exposure to every career area.
Students also experience the Library program, which is an important part of the Exploratory experience. While ‘Library' is not a CTE program, it provides students with opportunities to explore another area of learning, develop skills, and understand the resources and support available to them at Davies.
Students will explore:
- Advanced Manufacturing
- Automotive Collision Repair
- Automotive Technology
- Biomanufacturing Technology
- Cybersecurity
- Early Education
- Electrical & Renewable Energy
- Graphics & Interactive Media
- Health Careers
- Hospitality Careers
- Pre-Engineering Technology
- Library
Students also participate in several 9th-grade assemblies throughout the semester to learn more about student life, expectations, and opportunities available at Davies.
-
Every exploratory experience is hands-on.
Students may find themselves:
- Designing and building projects
- Using professional tools and equipment
- Creating digital media
- Programming computers
- Exploring healthcare skills
- Preparing culinary creations
- Working with engineering and manufacturing technology
- Learning about early childhood education
- Exploring library resources and services
- And much more!
The goal isn't to become an expert—it's to discover what excites you.
-
At the conclusion of Exploratory, students rank their preferred technical programs. Every effort is made to place students into one of their top choices while balancing program enrollment, available space, and student performance in the respective program.
As part of the selection process, students are evaluated using a universal Exploratory rubric that is used across all technical programs. This common rubric allows instructors to assess student engagement, participation, professionalism, skill development, and overall performance throughout the Exploratory experience. Student placement and program choice are influenced not only by their stated preferences, but also by how well they demonstrate success on the rubric.
Students begin full-time instruction in their assigned technical program during the second semester of 9th-Grade and remain in that program through graduation
-
Successful completion of the Freshman Exploratory Program earns students 0.5 Elective credits toward graduation.
Students are expected to actively participate, demonstrate professionalism, follow all safety expectations, complete required assignments, and engage positively in each exploratory experience.
-
Choosing a career pathway at age 14 isn't easy. Exploratory allows every student to make an informed decision based on real experiences—not just descriptions in a brochure or what they think they know about a particular program.
By the end of the semester, students have a much better understanding of:
- The technical programs offered at Davies
- Their interests and strengths
- Different career opportunities
- Industry expectations
- The Library program and resources available to support their success
- Potential college and career pathways
At Davies, we don't expect 9th-Graders to have all the answers on day one. Exploratory is designed to help them discover them.
-
