The mission of the Education and Childcare program is to cultivate a new generation of highly skilled educators by guiding students from high school through college and into their teaching careers. This program focuses on empowering aspiring educators who reflect the diversity of their communities and who are committed to making a positive impact through public education, ultimately transforming the teaching profession.
At Davies, students are trained in the fundamentals of teaching and working with young children, from birth through elementary age, preparing them to become the educators of tomorrow. Ideal candidates for this program are organized, compassionate, enjoy working with others, and have a passion for helping others. The program covers essential topics including the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of children, alongside key concepts in child growth, health, nutrition, safety, and guidance. Students will also explore various early childhood career pathways.
Davies' Education and Childcare program equips students to earn their Paraprofessional certification through the Rhode Island Department of Education by successfully completing the ParaPro assessment. Additional certifications include OSHA10 and Child and Baby First Aid/CPR/AED, further enhancing students' qualifications.
The YMCA at Davies:
Davies students benefit from hands-on learning through an onsite satellite YMCA preschool program, where they can apply classroom concepts in real-world settings. By observing and interacting with young children, students gain practical experience in meeting the developmental needs and interests of early learners.
There is a pressing demand for educators, with 1.6 million teachers expected to retire and a significant decline (35%) in teacher preparation program enrollments since 2009. Furthermore, 19-30% of new teachers leave the profession within their first five years, with even higher turnover rates in low-income schools. As the student population becomes increasingly diverse (52.5% children of color; 7% Black, 9% Hispanic), there is a growing need for teachers who reflect this diversity.
