Mr. Nesse’s 10th-grade English classes are currently reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the powerful nonfiction book that tells the story of a woman whose cancer cells—taken without her knowledge—became the first human cells to be grown in a lab and used for groundbreaking research.
To deepen their understanding of the book’s scientific and ethical themes, Mr. Nesse invited a special guest: Dr. Toth, Director of the Multidisciplinary Teaching Laboratories at Brown University.
Today, Dr. Toth spoke with students about the real-world science behind the story, as well as the ethical questions it raises about medical consent, race, and research.
Thank you to Dr. Toth for making this experience so meaningful and memorable!
