Abigail Grullon’s story is a shining example of how career and technical education (CTE) can transform a student’s passion into a professional skill set. As a student in the Hospitality program at William M. Davies, Jr. Career & Technical High School, Abigail has taken full advantage of her CTE journey, which combines classroom instruction, hands-on training, and real-world experiences.
Her dedication to her craft and willingness to learn led to an invaluable work-based learning opportunity at the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel, a premier 4-star establishment.
In June, Davies’ Career Coordinator, Mrs. Dacier, shared an opportunity for Hospitality students to work at the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel. Despite being unfamiliar with the hotel, Abigail’s eagerness to expand her knowledge propelled her forward. After an interview, she was hired on the spot.
Her summer at the Renaissance allowed her to immerse herself in the hotel’s dynamic kitchen environment. While July provided a quieter pace to learn the ropes, the tempo picked up in August when the hotel hosted NFL teams, including the Carolina Panthers. Abigail worked side-by-side with Executive Chef Brian Rusin and Sous Chef Dale, learning to navigate high-pressure situations, such as preparing breakfast and dinner for 150 guests with a small team.
“I thought it would be overwhelming,” Abigail shared, “but breaking down tasks and staying calm made all the difference.” From early morning breakfasts at 5 a.m. to late-night dinners, Abigail honed her skills, proving that determination and preparation could conquer any challenge.
Abigail credits her success to the lessons and support she received in the Hospitality Careers program at Davies. At school, instructors provide a supportive environment where students can learn at their own pace. However, her work-based learning experience pushed her to apply those lessons under professional expectations.
“At work, they expect you to know what they know,” Abigail explained. “I wouldn’t have been ready for that if I hadn’t stayed focused during classes.”
Her advice to other students considering CTE? “Be on time and stay focused. Distractions will only hold you back from achieving your goals.” Abigail encourages those uncertain about their future to explore CTE programs like those at Davies, where students can discover their passions and develop real-world skills.
Abigail’s love for food and cooking was inspired by watching shows like Chopped on the Food Network. She’s always been drawn to the creativity of the culinary arts and finds fulfillment in seeing others enjoy her food.
“When people appreciate what I’ve made, it feels incredible. It’s exciting to know I can turn this passion into a career,” she said.
Abigail’s journey highlights the importance of CTE in preparing students for success. Her experience at the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel has deepened her skills, broadened her horizons, and fueled her confidence to pursue a career in the culinary arts.
For Abigail, CTE has been a transformative experience. Her advice to others echoes her journey: “If you don’t know what you want to do, attend a school like Davies. It allows you to explore and choose from programs that give you skills at a young age.”
With a strong foundation built on education, experience, and passion, Abigail Grullon is on the path to a successful and fulfilling career in Rhode Island’s hospitality industry.
