Posted Date: 1/21/25 (7:00 PM)

Students pose with visitors.Last week, Mr. Fox welcomed two incredible teaching artists, Marlon Carey and Kate Lohman, who brought their expertise in theater, poetry, and performance to help our students prepare for the upcoming poetry competition. 🎭📜

Throughout the session, Marlon and Kate worked with students to master the essentials of a powerful performance, including:
✨ Centering and calming techniques for stage presence
🎙️ Voice projection and command
🕺 Physical presence to captivate an audience
🎭 Using tone and emotion to convey the depth of their chosen poems
Students stretching with visitors. To cap off the day, our talented students performed their poems in front of their peers and received valuable feedback from both the teaching artists and their audience. 💬
A huge thank you to Marlon and Kate for their inspiring visit and to our students for their courage and creativity on stage. We can’t wait to see their skills shine at the competition! ✨

Poetry Out Loud 2025: Are you interested in poetry, theater, or performance? Do you want to develop self-confidence and public speaking skills? Do you love the sound of your own voice, or want to love it?

Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation contest, with competitions at the school and state level. Students discover poems by published poets from the Poetry Out Loud website and then learn the poems by heart. After much practice and memorization, they perform the poems in front of an audience. Davies' competition will occur on Thursday, February 6th, during periods 4 and 5 in the Davies Library Media Center.
